Hopper

A Chute connected to a Stirling (Previously Steam) Engine

HopperGUI

The Chute GUI with 126 coal inside.

The Chute (formerly known as the Hopper due to the Vanilla Hopper) is a new block introduced in Buildcraft 3.2.0 for Minecraft 1.3.2. It has a 4 slot inventory and can be connected to blocks such as engines (or other machines etc. from other compatible mods), effectively increasing their internal storage capacity.

When the connected blocks inventory is empty, stacks from the chute will drain into the inventory of the block below as expected. At present items simply enter the top slot of the connected machine, regardless if this is appropriate.

Unfortunately, the chute is not able to pull items floating in the world into it; they must be placed in, either manually, or via a pipe. Connect the chute to Obsidian Pipe if you want to be able to throw items in.

The chute does not output into pipes without using a powered wooden pipe, meaning it is inferior to the cheaper chest for putting items into pipes. A chute will feed directly into a chute under it, thus increasing the storage space even more.

It has been removed in Minecraft 1.5.2.
